OMIROS - From 1946 to today…
In 1946, Dimitrios Avramidis founded the Hellenic-American Educational Institute, the forerunner of the Omiros educational group. Dimitrios Avramidis served as General Secretary of the Association until the year 1979.
For the first time in Greece, training programmes for secretaries and accountants were are offered by the Institute.
In the 1960s, the institute offered one of the first journalism schools in Greece and in the year 1968, was renamed to ‘OMIROS’ by a group of well-known personalities, led by Dimitrios Lampadarios, rector of the National Technical University of Athens and member of the Academy of Athens.
The ‘OMIROS’ council members included distinguished representatives of intellectual and cultural life in Greece, including the writer and journalist, Mary Bousboureli, the rector of the School of Agriculture of Athens, Panagiotis Anagnostopoulos, the well-known professor of the Technical University of Athens, Theodoros Kougioumtzelis, the writer Stratis Myrivilis and the founder of the Greek National Conservatory, Manolis Kalomiris.
During the 1980s, ‘OMIROS’ was one of the first educational organizations to invest in immerging New Technologies, such as Computing, while gradually expanding its activity in a wide range of fields of academic study and vocational training.
In 1992 the ‘OMIROS’ Vocational Training Institute is founded, expanding its portfolio to Financial Management, Computer Science and Multimedia.
‘OMIROS’ is an active member of the Association of Information Technology and Communication organisations (SEPE) and the Association of Computer Scientists (EPY) and becomes one of the first educational organizations to develop synchronous and asynchronous distance learning education via Internet (e-learning) in collaboration with major Greek banking institutions (Alpha Bank, Emporiki) and organisations.
In 1997 Aegean Omiros College – a Center for Post-Secondary Education is founded, offering University programmes of study in collaboration with international university partners.
During the decade of the 2000s, IEK OMIROS develops and offers innovative programmes in the fields of Health, Beauty and Tourism.
In 2016, IEK OMIROS expands its activities with new, state-of-the-art facilities in the center of Piraeus.
From 2018 onwards, ‘OMIROS’ further expands its offer of innovative, labour-market demanded, vocational training and lifelong learning programmes, beyond Attica, to include a new educational facilities, in the center of Larissa and Thessaloniki.
